Financial help

Life with a family member with PWS can often mean additional expenses for the household, and any additional financial help that can be obtained can be useful. Although a diagnosis of PWS doesn’t automatically entitle families to financial support there are some allowances that can be applied for. A family's circumstances will be considered on a case by case basis, against the set criteria in each situation.

Sources of Financial Support

Applications can take a long time and can be challenging to complete.

The leaflets below contain guidance to help you fill out applications with PWS in mind.

PWSA can also provide advice and/or a letter to support your application, if required.

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) – 3months to 15 years old – made up from 2 components, the ‘care component’ and the ‘mobility component’ and to get DLA you must be eligible for at least one component - www.gov.uk/dla-disability-living-allowance-benefit

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – from 16 years onwards – potential help with costs if you have a long term ill-health or disability

Support to find and access grants

We have compiled a downloadable list of organisations that can help you access funding, as well as those who can also provide grants themselves, including to help with equipment, holidays, housing and days out.

Managing money for adults with PWS

Adults with PWS will usually need extra support to manage finances and benefits. This is especially important because of the impact that hyperphagia has on someone's ability to make good decisions about money and spending money on food.
