Professionals involved in your child's care

Children and young people with PWS require multi-professional advice and oversight from infancy onwards.

Once you have received a diagnosis, your child might receive input from:

  • Hospital Paediatrician—general overview and referral to other services
  • Endocrine Paediatrician—advice on hormones and PWS
  • Consultant Community Paediatrician—to oversee local services
  • Paediatric dietitian—dietary advice
  • Child Development team—general development and support
  • Physiotherapist– for muscle tone and core strength
  • Speech and language therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Social worker from Children with Disabilities team

We know this list looks overwhelming - you do not need to see all of these professionals all of the time. They should, in time, form a network of support around you to help you through your journey.

PWS specialist clinics

There are a number of NHS-run PWS specialist clinics across the UK, and your GP can refer your son or daughter to them.

  • Specialist clinics and local services

Every child with PWS should be under the care of an endocrinologist or paediatrician with special interest in endocrinology.

Some paediatric endocrinology services in the UK have a special interest in PWS and may be multi-disciplinary, (meaning you could see other clinicians involved in your child's care such as dieticians in the same clinic). The PWSA team also attend some of these clinics to offer additional support and advice, and you may have the opportunity to connect with other families.

Good care for PWS can also be delivered outside these services.

Local services need to deliver support with speech and language, physiotherapy, development, social services, education, specialist apparatus (eg for breathing support) etc and the special interest services cannot provide locally delivered services.

If you are not currently in one of the special interest clinics but would like to be seen there, talk to your current consultant. Usually clinics need a referral from your current endocrinologist.
